Have you ever had a friend with their Sun in the same element sign as you? Like, a Pisces and a Cancer or a Virgo and a Capricorn? There's a click, something that starts off immediately as you two come to understand that you're made of then same cloth. But just because you're made of the same cloth doesn't mean you're the same design. That's the element of the trine and the key to interpreting it - there's a mutual understanding because of the element, but fundamental differences that lie underneath.
I've mentioned in a previous post that modes describe how a group of signs act, and that elements describe the core nature of a sign. So for example, squares have commonalities too, because they are the same mode. But that's exactly what causes the tension in a square - they're too alike in some ways but very different in others. (You can read my article about the square aspect in astrology here.) We kind of have the opposite thing happen with a trine. All of the zodiac signs involved have a base level of understanding with one another because the element involved is the same. But each of the modes involved with a trine aspect is what makes things so tricky and so slippery - because they're all different.
So while there's a base level of understanding between, say, a Pisces and a Scorpio - and that is relating, emoting, empathy, and a deep sense of understanding - how they go about those things is very different. If we're just talking about emotions, for example, Cancer examines the gentle, the soft, and consistency that we get from relationships. Scorpio can often relate to the depth of those relationships, the hurt we can sometimes feel in them, and healing from old wounds. Pisces looks at the relationship we have with things outside of us - the spiritual, the imagination, and all the things we can't control.
In his Book of Water Steven Forrest describes the water signs as starting out with a shell - there's an inherent defensiveness to our emotions in both Cancer and Scorpio, but Pisces is without a shell or a hard exterior. It lays everything bare, and it's there for all to see. The water signs can be seen as an evolution of the emotional cycle. And it is, after all, a cycle. It begins and ends and renews all over again.
And that is the essence of a trine, my friends. It's an innate way of understanding but an entirely different way of acting. It's a cycle of completion, and that's what makes the trine so easy. Because we feel, even if just a little bit, what comes next, or what we're supposed to do. It feels natural. And that is what makes the trine aspect so slippery and so lucky - because things just flow.
I hope this helped!
With love,
Abby :)
